Mt. Everest
Today
The Everest Live Project was inspired by the tragedy of November 10,
1995, when a cyclone developed in the Gulf of Bengal and unexpectedly rushed
up north toward the Himalayas. The cyclone caused heavy rains and
numerous avalanches, one of which buried 13 trekkers and 14 Nepalese supporters
who had reached the peak of Gohkyo. The Everest Live project attempted
to mobilize the variety of meteorological sources available through the
Internet to prevent tragedies such as this one. Though live pictures
are no longer available, the site offers an archive from September 1996
to May 1998.
